Preparing for Your Photography Session with Pets

This gorgeous family brought their newest addition to the family to their studio photography session and I’m thrilled with the final images! I absolutely love when clients include their pets in their photography session! Your pet after all, is part of the family and sometimes family pets can even make anxious children more relaxed in front of the camera.
Ways to prepare if you are planning on bringing your family pet!
Bring a leash.
This will help you keep your pet closest to you and where you want him or her in the photos. Be sure to bring a thinner leash in a neutral color tone as they are easier to hide or edit out if necessary.
Invite Grandma & Grandpa.
Having someone come with you that knows your pet to specifically to take care of your pet is ideal. This will help so that your pet is not running around, anxious or having to be placed in a kennel in the event that we take images without your pet.
Bring Treats.
Treats are great bribery for your animal and it will help keep your pet still and focused on the camera if need be. Smaller treats that are easy to handle and fast to consume are the best! I highly recommend visiting Calgary owned and operated Doodle Dogs as they have a large assortment of pet treats for both dogs and cats!
Bring A Favorite Toy.
The noisier the better!! This is also a great tool to help keep your pet’s attention on me and I can also use it to attempt to get some fun interaction shots with your pet and children.
Clean Your Pet Prior To The Session.
Be sure to clean pets’ eyes and ensure they are clear of debris. A good brushing before the session will also help with dandruff or any loose hairs that might stick to your clothing. I do provide lint rollers, however the larger the dog the more hair can get out of control.
Pre-Session Pet Workout.
Your pet will pick up on the energy you bring to the session. Even the calmest pet will have trouble holding still, let alone co-operating with where we want him or her in the photograph. The more you can do to help work off your pets energy prior to the session the better!
Don’t Forget Your Shoes.
With your family pet most likely low to the ground for most of the session, remember to polish your shoes as they will be seen in the final images. Dark shoes are usually best, trying to avoid athletic runners or shoes that do not complement your overall outfit.
