How to Prepare for Your Calgary Graduation Photography Session

Calgary Graduation Portrait Photography | Baker Park

Graduating from school is a major accomplishment and a graduation portrait photography session is a wonderful way to commemorate this incredible milestone moment. Whether you're graduating from a Calgary high school, college, or university you'll want to look your absolute best for your graduation photo session. Here are some helpful tips on what to wear and how to prepare for your grad portrait session.

Choose the right outfits.

When it comes to selecting your outfit for your grad photography session, it's important to keep a few things in mind. First, consider the location and time of day for your shoot. If you're taking photos outdoors, you'll want to dress appropriately for the weather and terrain. I will usually recommend that we photograph you in two outfits, one that is more casual and reflects your daily style and personality and a more formal outfit which is perhaps what you plan to wear to your graduation ceremony. Additionally, choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Try to avoid busy patterns or logos that may distract from your face and opt for solid colors or simple prints instead. Finally, don't forget to accessorize with items like jewelry or a hat that reflect your personal style.

Consider your hair and makeup.

When preparing for your graduation portrait photography session, it's important to consider your hair and makeup. You want to look polished and put together, but also like yourself. For hair, consider a style that is classic and timeless, such as loose waves or a sleek updo. Avoid any drastic changes, such as a new haircut or color, right before your session. For makeup, keep it natural and enhance your features. Avoid heavy contouring or bold colors that may not translate well in photos. Remember, the goal is to look like the best version of yourself. I do have hair stylists and make-up artists that I can recommend should you want to book in to have professional hair and make-up done the morning of your photoshoot.

Bring props that represent your achievements.

Graduation portrait photography is all about celebrating your achievements, so why not bring props that represent them? Whether it's your cap and gown, a diploma, or a special award, incorporating these items into your photos can add a personal touch and make them even more meaningful. Adding in some simple props to your graduation photo session can also be a fun way to showcase your personality and interests. Consider bringing items such as sports equipment, musical instruments, or even your favorite book. These props can add a personal touch to your photos and make them more unique. Prior to your session we will cover all the different options and the vision you have for your grad photos so that we are fully prepared with a plan for your photoshoot day.

Decide on a location.

Once we have reviewed what you plan to wear, we will want to decide on a location that reflects your personality and style. Consider places that hold special meaning to you, such as your school campus or a local park. If you play sports, perhaps you want to be photographed where you spend lots of your time mastering your craft. For example, if you are a competitive skater, hockey player or ringette player - perhaps we head to the rink for your grad portrait session. Alternatively, studio portraits are always a great option should you want something more timeless and don’t want to deal with our unpredictable weather here in Calgary. If you're truly unsure of where you would like to be photographed, I do have lots of suggestions based on my experience photographing other graduates.

Get Lots of Rest.

When it comes to graduation portrait photography, taking care of yourself before the shoot is just as important as choosing the right outfit and location. Make sure to get enough sleep and stay hydrated to ensure you look and feel your best on the day of the photoshoot. It's also a good idea to avoid scheduling any stressful events or activities leading up to the shoot, as this can affect your energy and focus during the session. Remember, the goal is to capture this special moment in your life, so take the time to prepare and enjoy the experience!

Relax and have fun!

The most important thing to remember during your graduation photo session is to relax and have fun! This is a special moment in your life and you want to enjoy it. You can trust in me to capture the best images of you on this special day and don't be afraid to try different poses or expressions.
