Toronto Kids Fashion Week 2024

Shaping Perceptions of Beauty Through Fashion Photography

Season 18 - Calgary Show

Was thrilled to be back at Toronto Kids Fashion Week to photograph all of the amazing models and to reconnect with familiar designers from last years show. This year I photographed three runway shows that took place on Sunday April 14, 2024 at the Telus Convention Centre and as expected, this event did not disappoint. This year the show included 18 fashion designers that showcased their newest collections on the runway for a very excited crowd. Toronto Kids Fashion Week (TKFW) celebrates children's fashion and the latest trends in kids' apparel and accessories. It provides a platform for both established and emerging designers to display their collections specifically tailored for children.

I myself find that fashion photography inspires my creativity and imagination by pushing the boundaries of artistry, composition, and storytelling. I love when I get the chance to collaborate with designers, stylists, makeup artists, and models to create visually stunning and innovative images that inspire viewers and push the boundaries of conventional beauty standards. Child fashion photography and teen fashion photography is important to me because I feel it has the power to shape perceptions of beauty, identity, and self-expression and also provides an opportunity to challenge stereotypes, celebrate diversity, and promote inclusivity.

Below are some highlights from the weekend, stay tuned over the next couple weeks for my “Designer Spotlight” series that will feature more designers and their newest collections launched at the 2024 Toronto Kids Fashion Week Runway Shows.

The three runway shows that I photographed highlighted a diverse range of styles, from casual wear to formal attire, and everything in between. The aim of Toronto Kids Fashion Week is not only to showcase fashion but also to promote creativity, diversity, and self-expression among children. It's an opportunity for designers to tap into the growing market of children's fashion and for parents to explore new trends and brands for their little ones.

During the day, there were 18 designers that showcased their newest collections on the runway were Rain on Me, Noria & Co, Linda Bellino (Boys), Oakley Rae Handmade, SAIFI, Alexandra Sam, Belia Belei, Mini Street, Oba's Closet, All About Inspo, Eyes On Mi, Lucky Seven, Oak Collective, Linda Bellino (Girls), Fernwood Kids, Javeda Baby, A Squared Apparel and LMCG Designs!

Capturing Fashion Trends and Promoting Brands

TKFW serves as a platform to celebrate the unique and vibrant world of kids' fashion while also fostering a sense of community within the industry. As a Calgary event and fashion photographer, being at this show provides me with the ability to capture and showcase the latest trends in clothing, accessories, and styles. I help to play a crucial role in conveying the mood, aesthetic, and narrative behind these incredible fashion collections. Being able to help brands and designers promote their products by creating visually appealing and captivating images that attract consumers' attention brings me true joy. My fashion images have been used in advertising campaigns, designer look books, editorials and all over various social media platforms to help build brand identity and recognition for these amazing designers.

Building Confidence Through Modelling and Kids Fashion Photography

Childhood empowerment through modeling is a transformative experience that nurtures self-confidence and self-esteem in young children and teens. Serving as a model allows children to express their unique personalities and style on a public platform, instilling a sense of pride and ownership over their appearance. Through the process of modeling, children learn to embrace their individuality and celebrate their diverse identities, fostering a strong sense of self-worth. The positive feedback and encouragement received from peers, mentors, and audiences further bolster their confidence, validating their sense of belonging and acceptance. By showcasing their talents and personalities on the runway, young models develop invaluable life skills such as poise, resilience, and effective communication, empowering them to navigate future challenges with grace and confidence.

Having professional photos taken not only captures moments of beauty and creativity of your children but also serves as a powerful tool for empowering models to embrace their unique qualities and celebrate their individuality. It provides a tangible representation of their appearance, allowing them to see themselves through a different lens and appreciate their unique features. Seeing themselves captured in moments of beauty and expression can enhance their self-perception and reaffirm their sense of worth. When collaborating with a skilled professional fashion photographer who provides guidance and positive reinforcement, your child will be left with portraits that serve as a form of validation and recognition, both internally and externally, reinforcing the child’s belief in their abilities and potential!

Must Have Gear for Fashion Runway Photography

Photographing runway fashion shows allow me as an event and fashion photographer to immerse myself in the vibrant world of fashion culture. I love that I get the opportunity to witness firsthand the creativity, passion, and artistry that goes into creating the show itself but also at the same time gaining insight into the fashion industry and its trends. It is extremely important to me that during these runway shows, I am able to document high quality fashion photos that the designers will fall in love with. The runway is definitely a fast-paced environment where split-second timing is crucial. Thankfully with my two favorite mirrorless camera bodies the Canon R5 and the Canon R6 Mark II, I can easily capture the key moments as they unfold. My favourite go to lens is the Canon RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM with that dreamy wide open aperture of 2.8! The other lens that I love to use for those wide angle photos of the models coming down the runway is the Canon RF24-70mm F2.8L IS USM. Whether it's a model striking a pose or the flutter of fabric while they are walking down the runway, I know I’ve got the shot!
